Detailed Course Descriptions
"The Next Level"
Rabbi Mark Wildes
Sundays, 9:15 AM
Join Rabbi Mark Wildes on Sunday mornings for a textual, in-depth class on Shabbat, Kashrut, Berakhot and Tefilah. Learn the very practical issues of warming food on Shabbat, non-Jewish help on Shabbat, and other relevant Shabbat issues. Study some of the pertinent laws of milk and meat and how to maintain a kosher kitchen. Familiarize yourself with the different kinds of blessings recited on the various foods and occasions. This course will include a textual study of some of the writings of the Rambam (Maimonides) on issues pertaining to personality development and prayer. Finally, as each holiday approaches, we will study the festivals, both in terms of their underlying concepts and ideas, as well as the particular observances relevant to the holiday.

"Joshua, Judges, & Genocide"
Moral Problems in the Early Prophets
Rabbi Eitan Mayer
Mondays, 8:00-9:00 PM
Jewish law and morality are rooted in Tanakh (the Bible). Yet, there are parts of Tanakh which read more like the Wild Wild West than like a description of any Jewish society we know. In Joshua, we read of Jews committing genocide; in Judges, we learn of a Jewish town which commits acts so ruthless that they can only be called Sodomite. Throughout, like twin threads running through the narrative, utter chaos and rampant idolatry seem to be the rule rather than the exception. How do we approach our early history as a people in its land? How did the nation which accepted the Torah become the unruly rabble we read about in the Early Prophets, and how did we get from there to here? Join us as we explore the developing moral identity of our nation.

“Midei Chodesh Be-Chodsho”
Monthly Class for Women
Mrs. Sally Mayer
Tuesdays once a month, 8:00 PM
Join us each month as we explore themes related to the holidays and happenings of the month.

The Brink of Redemption:
The Second Coming of the Jewish People
The Sadye and Henry Bayer Chumash Class
Rabbi Ari Berman: Tuesdays, 8:00 PM
Reaching the border of Israel, the Jewish people stand ready to take possession of the Land pledged to their forefathers centuries earlier. But more than the Jordan River separates them from redemption. Fear, paralysis, and memories of the Meraglim haunt the characters as the story unfolds. How will the second generation succeed where their fathers failed? We often miss the drama and power of biblical stories because we know their conclusion. But this class will read the end of the book of Be-Midbar as if it were our first time. Paying careful attention to the nuances of the narrative, gleaning hints from the subtleties in language and using literary techniques, we will attempt to piece together the story and produce a fresh understanding of these tales.

Advanced Talmud: Masekhet Ketubot
Rabbi Ari Berman
Tuesdays 9:15 – 10:15 PM
This Talmud class will study the Jewish court system as it is presented in Masekhet Sanhedrin and related Gemarot, using classic Brisker Lomdus to rigorously analyze the Talmudic concepts. For those interested in advance preparation, sources will be distributed before each class, and study partners will be arranged for participants who wish to prepare the sources together.

Of Prophets and Prose
Mrs. Chana Rogosnitzky
Wednesdays, 11:00 AM
Join us in a guided group study of selected Haftarot. This class will explore the themes of various Haftarot and their connection to the Torah portion, as well as provide a basic analysis of the text. Get a taste of the different Nevi’im and their styles and messages as depicted in the Haftarah selection.

Interfaith Issues: Judaism and Christianity
Rabbi Meir Soloveichik
Wednesdays, 8:00 PM
How do we relate to the various forms of Christianity that exist today? Does Judaism view Protestantism differently than it views Catholicism? What forms of dialogue did Rabbbi J.B. Soloveitchik permit between Judaism and Catholicism, and what did he prohibit? These and other questions will be discussed as we continue last year’s comparative religion class with a contemporary twist. (One need not have attended last year’s course).
